Items We Do Not Accept (Residential, Home Appliances etc)

At Beyond Surplus, we specialize in electronics recycling and IT asset disposition.
For safety, regulatory, and processing reasons, we cannot accept certain household items and devices listed below.

🚫 Overview: Non-Accepted Items

We do not accept:

  • Kitchen appliances (large & small)

  • Refrigerators & freezers

  • Wine coolers

  • Ovens & stoves (gas or electric)

  • Washers & dryers

  • Light bulbs (all types)

  • Fluorescent bulbs & tubes

  • Ballasts / fluorescent light ballasts

  • Light fixtures & lamps

  • Smoke detectors

  • Mercury-containing devices

  • Miscellaneous household appliances & devices

Why?
Many of these items contain refrigerants, mercury, or other hazardous materials that must be handled under specialized programs separate from electronics recycling.

🍽️ Kitchen Appliances (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Microwaves

  • Toasters / toaster ovens

  • Coffee makers, blenders, mixers

  • Countertop cookers, air fryers, slow cookers

🧊 Refrigerators, Freezers & Wine Coolers (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Full-size refrigerators & freezers

  • Mini-fridges / dorm fridges

  • Wine coolers & beverage coolers

Reason: Contain refrigerants and oils that require specialized collection and processing.

🔥 Ovens, Ranges & Stoves (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Electric or gas ranges

  • Built-in ovens

  • Cooktops

🧺 Washers & Dryers (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Residential washing machines

  • Clothes dryers (gas or electric)

  • Washer–dryer combos

Reason: Classified as large appliances/white goods and must be processed through metal or appliance recyclers, not electronics recyclers.

💡 Bulbs & Lamps (Not Accepted)

We cannot accept any type of bulb, including:

  • Incandescent bulbs

  • Halogen bulbs

  • LED bulbs

  • CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs

  • Fluorescent tubes (T5, T8, T12, etc.)

Reason: Many bulbs contain hazardous materials such as mercury and must be handled under a lamp recycling program.

📦 Ballasts & Fluorescent Light Ballasts (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Magnetic and electronic fluorescent ballasts

  • Ballasts removed from fluorescent fixtures

Reason: Some older ballasts may contain PCBs or other hazardous materials.

💡 Fixtures, Lights & Light Bars (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Ceiling light fixtures

  • Fluorescent light fixtures/troffers

  • Shop lights, vanity lights, track lights

  • Outdoor light fixtures

🚨 Smoke Detectors (Not Accepted)

Includes:

  • Ionization smoke detectors

  • Photoelectric smoke detectors

  • Combination smoke/CO detectors

Reason: Many units contain small radioactive sources or other regulated components that require a specialized disposal program.

☿ Mercury-Containing Devices (Not Accepted)

Examples:

  • Mercury thermostats

  • Mercury switches

  • Mercury thermometers

  • Some older industrial controls

Reason: Elemental mercury is hazardous and must be managed under dedicated hazardous waste or mercury take-back programs.

🧰 Miscellaneous Household Appliances & Devices (Not Accepted)

These items should not be included with your electronics recycling:

  • Vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners

  • Space heaters, fans, humidifiers, dehumidifiers

  • Irons, hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners

  • Kitchen gadgets not listed above that aren’t data-bearing electronics

🏋️‍♂️ Gym & Exercise Equipment (Not Accepted)

We do not accept any gym or exercise equipment. These items fall under bulky metal goods, mixed material assemblies, or mechanical devices that are not classified as electronics.

❌ Examples of Gym & Exercise Equipment We Do Not Accept:

  • Treadmills

  • Ellipticals

  • Stationary bikes

  • Weight benches

  • Home gyms & cable machines

  • Free weights (dumbbells, kettlebells, plates)

  • Rowing machines

  • Steppers / stair climbers

  • Yoga / fitness accessories (balls, resistance bands, mats)

Reason: Most fitness machines contain large metal frames, belts, hydraulics, or mechanical assemblies that must be handled by specialized metal or equipment recyclers—not electronics recyclers.
